War (2002)

I last watched it when I was a kid, around 12-13 years old. Back then, many of the film's themes went over my head. I had a simpler view of the world, wanting straightforward stories with clear distinctions between good and bad, showing what to do and what not to do. So, this film didn't quite resonate with me at the time. I only remember a joke about tea and one of the last lines spoken by the main character. It's an excellent film, captivating from start to finish, and its high rating of 8 points is, in my opinion, well-deserved. The only downside is the combat scenes, but the more films I watch, the more I realize that this is actually quite common (though still disappointing). I recommend watching this film while it's still available, before it's labeled as extremist. It contains some harsh things said about the multinational peoples of our country, features music by foreign agents banned in the Russian Federation, and who knows what else. I would especially like to see a review from AlexIgol, if possible....

The portrayal of the sheep-herders and their offspring is simply 10/10, I swear. And the base camp, the handover of Holland, etc., is also well done. And the "live to forty, and then it's all over" theme is quite poignant.
I was laughing out loud at the scene in the bunker; it's truly an army of the brain, with its dull bass lines, and I hate them.
I had some acquaintances who went through the Chechen war, but they are just acquaintances now... They didn't tell me anything similar or show me anything like that. They just said that things were better before, but as I said, the portrayal of the sheep-herders here is accurate and realistic. Of course, the Ukrainians are capable of more than just cutting off fingers, so in that sense, the film is quite tame. But apart from the general plot and the strange, calm speech of the characters (based on experience, in firefights, either there is complete silence (which means complete chaos) or hysterical screams (which means everything is generally under control), but definitely not calm negotiations), everything is quite lively. And of course, in real life, no one would fly there; they would just say "unlucky" and that would be the end of it, just like at that unnamed airfield.
I didn't appreciate the soundtrack.
Oh yes, things were better before.

I didn't really like it. It looks good, you can watch it in one sitting, and the scenery is decent, but I think that's about all the good things I can say about it. For half of the movie, the characters are just mumbling to themselves about uninteresting things, as if you walked into a drunk father's kitchen. The other half is action, which, in my opinion, is what saves the movie somewhat. There's no depth or even a rich Balabanov-esque atmosphere, which is obvious, considering this is one of his earlier works.
Just an average movie.
