I wanted to change the unicorn cursor because I'm creating my own build without unnecessary modifications, only improving the vanilla version with graphics, convenience, and various features. I wanted to use a familiar cursor from Heroes III in the form of a neat horse.
Regarding whether anyone has bothered with this before, an internet search yielded the following information:
...the cursor (Pointer) can be hardware or software based, and this is set in the "Video and Sound" settings. What's the difference? It's like this: if the cursor is set as "hardware," then the corresponding files are taken from the HoMM5_Dir/hwcursors folder, and if it's software-based, they are taken from the game resources. By the way, for your information: a hardware cursor is four times smaller than a software cursor). So, if you want a large cursor, uncheck the corresponding setting; otherwise, check it).
Thus, the setting determines where the game takes the cursor files from (and therefore, where you need to put the horse).
So, if the cursor is hardware-based, that means the cursors are taken from hwcursors. To insert the horse there, unpack the icons.rar archive into it (8.39 Kb).
If the cursor is software-based, a mod will solve the problem. Here it is: oldhorse.pak (45.3 Kb)
You can also replace the cursors in both places, i.e., unpack the rar file into hwcursors and put the pak file into data – as a precaution.
That's it; the unicorn is a thing of the past. Enjoy!...

Unfortunately, the author's links don't work, so I had to search for myself and barely find a solution.
hwcursors_heroes_5 - this is a mod, or rather, the original version of the cursor taken from the base version of Heroes V (hardware cursor), which should be unpacked into the root folder of Heroes.
cursors - this is a software cursor, also with a horse, which will be larger in size; unpack it into the UserMODs folder.

hwcursors_new - and this version was taken from the heroescommunity.com website, also a hardware version, but it removes the horse altogether, replacing it with a glove; maybe someone will like it; unpack it into the root folder of Heroes.

If you have any developments, I suggest we exchange them; after all, achieving a cursor like in Heroes III didn't work out; perhaps someone will try to create or adapt an existing version.
