They killed an ordinary person who wasn't plotting anything (though he was a bit eccentric), a friend of Rutger.
I believe this analysis is inherently biased. There are good reasons to believe that this person is the culprit: the cat doesn't like him, he's heading towards the ruler, even though the ruler or his wife didn't warn us about any guests, and he randomly beat up Anselm, just for being rude. Furthermore, in the task we were given, no one mentioned any exceptions allowing people to wander around the forest. Of course, this theory might be wrong, but completely ignoring it is not right. If you want to downplay the situation, that's your decision; I, like any other member of the party, will abide by the majority opinion, but there's no need to pretend that saying "it was just a prank, bro))))" is the only reasonable option.
The problem is that no one bothered to analyze even superficially whether this meant exactly that, or just "be careful" or "it's better to stay away from this crazy person." And I strongly suspect that the cat was indeed misunderstood.
Of course, this is possible, although Leo had said before that if Anders were to choose suicidal options, he would definitely warn him about it, and according to that logic, when Anders just started raising his crossbow, Leo should have thrown a tantrum, but that didn't happen.

What is the opinion of those knowledgeable about the setting on this matter?
If only we knew who Rutger was.
Certainly, this is possible, although Leo had said before that if Anders were to choose suicidal options, he would definitely warn about it, and according to that logic, when Anders just started raising his crossbow, Leo should have thrown a fit, but that didn't happen.
