The bottle design is excellent: heavy, angular, sealed, easy to grip, sturdy; it looks reliable and brutal, masculine, if you don't mind me saying so. And the label is made of stylish paper that resembles old parchment. The drink itself has a pleasant dark caramel color, but unfortunately, it doesn't “play” much in the glass under light, unlike most lighter whiskeys.
At first, the smell seemed sharp to me, like the taste of Wild Turkey 101, but when the bourbon "breathed" for a bit, everything fell into place. It smells like a spicy sweet-spicy bourbon, with caramel in the background, and a hint of vanilla. Overall, although the aroma isn't the softest, it is definitely pleasant.
Now for the most interesting part - the taste. It slightly burns upon swallowing, similar to the aforementioned Wild Turkey 101, but much less intensely; only the palate suffers. You immediately feel the powerful, rich flavor of spiced bourbon, which is complemented by the sweet taste of the original corn malt. As it spreads with a pleasant warmth across the palate and throat, it leaves a pleasant, balanced aftertaste of sweet vanilla with spicy notes.
It’s also strong – 45%. One might think this means it would be good for getting drunk... But no. Firstly, it lacks softness, at least when served warm. Secondly, it's simply a shame to consume it in large quantities because after a certain amount, you can no longer distinguish the flavors, and that would be unforgivable for a drink of this caliber. So, either get tipsy and stop, or get tipsy and switch to something else. A good idea would be to start the evening with Mark, and finish with Beam, or cheaper turkey.
In conclusion, an excellent drink, perhaps the most refined and flavorful of bourbons. If it were softer, it would be priceless. But as it is, it gets a 9/10. At least the price is reasonable. If you let it flow across the palate, it's a bit harsh and spicy. On the lower part of the tongue, it's sweet and vanilla. In both cases, the taste is simple but pleasant. The aftertaste is weak, but the drink itself is smooth. You can compare it to "Winchester," and both are excellent bourbons, much better than "Jim Beam." The turkey loses out in terms of smoothness and sweetness, but, as it seemed to me, it wins in richness. Overall, it's a fair, good 8/10. Worth it.
Then I tried "Espolon Reposado." Until this point, I had only drunk white tequila, and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm drinking a "Whisky Smash." Very good! You can only taste the mint and lemon (some of my favorite flavors), and the whiskey is almost completely subdued, leaving only faint hints of itself. In total, it's an excellent cocktail, but as a fan of "strong drinks" neat, I wouldn't drink it often because you can't taste the whiskey. 8/10.
