In the school where I once studied, there was a very good history teacher. He said that the Chechen military conflict was beneficial for politicians. I don't remember exactly how, but it had something to do with oil...

But slightly cheaper gasoline is an incentive to support the government. Try to have Siberia now advocate for secession – we will be accused of separatism, of inciting ethnic hatred. And all of Russia (that which is west of the Urals) will support the government. Because natural resources are a great thing. And to protect my land, I am ready to do very, very much.
