I decided to ask for opinions about this dark metal band, "Moonspell," if anyone has heard of them.

Personally, I consider them one of the best gothic bands...

Brief history:

Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band, founded in 1992. In the early days, the band played folk/black metal, and later, the band's work is also sometimes characterized as doom metal or gothic doom. The band's vocalist and lyricist, Fernando Ribeiro, himself uses the expression "devilish music."

Moonspell first entered the Portuguese charts with the album Sin/Pecado, and their album Memorial, released in 2006, reached the top spot in its first week. Before Moonspell, only Metallica and Iron Maiden had achieved such success among metal bands in Portugal.

The band was founded in 1989 under the name "Morbid God" in parallel with the undeveloped project "Archangel" (Fernando Ribeiro - drums, Ares - vocals, the other members soon left the band). The band's first rehearsals took place in a building belonging to the city council of their hometown, Brandoa, and the first recorded song was called "The Fever." Later, guitarist Mantus joined Morbid God, and in this lineup, the musicians released one demo recording (Serpent Angel, 1992). After recording Serpent Angel, Moonspell was invited by the independent label MTM to participate in a compilation of Portuguese metal bands. In the same year, the members changed the name to Moonspell. After the release of the very successful EP "Under the Moonspell" on Adipocere Records, in which Moonspell appeared as a black metal band with a very noticeable folk influence, the band's career went uphill. In 1994, Moonspell performed as the opening act for Cradle of Filth in Lisbon, and then signed a contract with Century Media. On Century Media, Moonspell released their debut album Wolfheart (1995). After the release of the debut album, a tour with Morbid Angel followed as a "supporting" band. In 1995-1996, Moonspell performed in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany. The next album, Irreligious, brought even greater success, and the music video for the song "Opium," which was filmed on the old streets of Lisbon, was shown on European television. On July 12, 1996, Moonspell performed in the old monastery Convento do Beato. The VIVA television channel recognized Moonspell as the "Discovery of the Year" in 1996 (other nominees were Korn and Marilyn Manson).

In 1997, the mini-album Second Skin was released, which contained a cover version of Depeche Mode's song "Sacred." On the following albums - Sin/Pecado and The Butterfly Effect - Moonspell began to experiment with the sound, adding elements of electronic music, which was met with mixed reactions from many fans. In 1998, the members of Moonspell (except for drummer Mike Gaspar) created the side project "Daemonarch" and under this name recorded the black metal album "Hermeticum" (1998).

In 2004, the band recorded a cover version of the jazz song "I'll See You in My Dreams" for the soundtrack to the Portuguese thriller of the same name. A music video with fragments of the film was filmed for this song.

After breaking up with Century Media, Moonspell signed a contract to record three albums with SPV/Steamhammer. The first album was Memorial (2006), which was noticeably heavier than previous works, but in its first week, it topped the Portuguese chart and made Moonspell one of the most popular Portuguese artists of all genres. Music videos were filmed for two songs from the album - "Finisterra" and "Luna."

In 2007, the release of the DVD Lunar Still/13 Years of Doom was planned.

The last major success of Moonspell was winning the "Best Artist from Portugal" award at the MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony held on November 2, 2006, in Copenhagen.

On June 29, 2007, the compilation of the band's best songs, The Great Silver Eye, was released. In the fall of the same year, the album Under Satan's Moon was released, which included reissues of the band's works from 1992-1994.

In May 2008, Moonspell released the album Night Eternal, but even before the official release date, the musicians posted the album on their MySpace page.
