I never liked miracles, and is the rest closer to the first three games or Total War? What matters to me is the role-playing aspect.

Dominions should also work well. And for role-playing, it offers a lot of room for imagination. However, as you've already seen, the graphics are quite unique. And certain nuances of the gameplay may not be immediately obvious. Or, there's Conquest of Elysium, a simpler (significantly simpler) game from the same developers, with several similar mechanics and graphics at the same level. (both series share a large portion of the assets). But it offers less flexibility and customization. And only one faction with eastern themes, if I remember correctly. Still, it's quite fun.
There's also Sovereignty: Crown of Kings, but I haven't played it much, only during early access. But it looked promising. And there are several other games that aren't quite as similar to what you requested, but also encourage imaginative play.

Based on my experience, this is almost always the case. Instead of demanding AAA games, you end up playing something else more often.
