Expedition: general discussions. Auto-translated

The GM must suffer.

No, I'm not even asking about that aspect. Some storylines can be short in themselves and have no direct connection to subsequent games in the same setting, meaning without "carrying over characters."

I already said that this is a perfectly normal approach. The GM has time to complete the plot and doesn't get too exhausted. It avoids situations where the game ends in the middle of the plot for one reason or another, and the remaining half ends up in the epilogue.

that is, without "transferring characters"

One-shots are also good, actually.

I agree. It would be even better if the characters also fit into the lore after the end of the session, rather than constantly dragging the same characters from game to game with new adventures, which would make them tiresome for this world.

Medium.

One-shot kills are actually pretty good.

It's good if there are resurrections available.

Transfer - cancer mechanic. Fight me.

When transferring, you risk losing a character who miraculously survived the previous expansion and deserves your affection just for that, all for the sake of some bonuses. This is a normal mechanic.

It's okay if there are resurrections.

I meant not gameplay-related one-shots, but rather isolated short stories that aren't planned to have sequels.

And what do you have...

How Cossacks played football, how Cossacks bought salt, how Cossacks became arena champions...

In short, this is actually how things are:
If you transfer a character to the next expansion:
1. It's often a shame to do so, because he survived here, but might die later, and that would be disappointing.
2. He might get debuffed if the system changes, and that's not very cool.
3. The downside is that you don't use the opportunity to come up with someone new (if you have any ideas, of course). However, if there are few choices during generation, not all ideas can be realized, but at least in terms of personality, someone might encompass more ideas, if not in terms of abilities and races.

2. He can debuff himself if the system changes, and that's not very good anymore.

They _always_ debuff themselves, and the bonuses (including equipment) rarely outweigh the difference between a regular bonus and an overpowered origin bonus or a bonus from certain cards.

Tsukiko only received a buff once, and only during breaks between parts of a single experience, because the system didn't change there, and other skills could be chosen. I don't remember any other such cases. But here, the logic seems to be to adapt old characters to new realities so that they don't simply steamroll through all stages of the new game. And, I must say, this is an argument against transfers. Indeed, it's an inconvenience for the GM to balance things so that transferred characters aren't completely on the level of greenhorn newbies, but also don't break the game. For players, there's a risk of "ruining" their favorite characters, and it's quite significant, as they might be nerfed. The only plus is if you lack the imagination for something new and interesting (this is relevant to me lately; it's hard to create a character that you can really get into).

When you decide to transfer your successful character to the next game; When you decide to eat fruit; When you sign up for a tournament; When you attack a non-player character; When you decide to insult the empress; When you agree to a suspicious offer.
