So, here's the story. My mom, due to health issues, can only eat sweet apples, specifically Gala and Golden varieties. She asked me to buy her some apples, but I forgot. And since I've been having this crazy apple craving lately, I went to the store for apples anyway. But I ended up getting Idared. Then, at home, I remembered what my mom asked for and ran to another store. There, at the fruit stand, there were two trays. One with red apples, the other with red apples. And two price tags, good luck figuring out which one belongs to which variety. One price tag said Gala, the other Red Delicious. I thought, "Okay, whatever, my mom won't care, I'll get Golden." Yeah, right. I looked – two boxes. One with green apples, the other with green apples. Price tags: Golden, Granny Smith. Granny Smith are tasty, but they're sour and not cheap, and I didn't want to play a lottery with the green apples. So I went with the red ones, since they were the same price. I was absolutely sure I had chosen Gala. At the checkout, I found out it was Red Delicious. Considering the size of the queues, the size of my bag, and the expressions on the faces of the people behind me, I realized that it was too much effort to argue or go back for Gala, and since my apple craving hadn't gone away, I figured it would do. So, in the end, my mom is without apples, and my jaw is already tired.
By the way, our local Billa store constantly sells seasonal apples from Russia. They're cheap, but it's quite a gamble. Sometimes they're incredibly delicious, and you can eat them by the kilo until you lose consciousness, and sometimes they're just awful. I guess it's because the variety isn't fixed, and they sell whatever is ripe.
My grandmother grows Antonovka and cinnamon apples, which are my favorite varieties, but the harvest is small, they don't sell them in stores, and I'm too lazy to go to the markets and bother my grandmother.
