Lasers don't have a 100% chance of hitting (unlike torpedoes), they have useless armor penetration (although plasma guns seem to penetrate shields, like rockets, but still), and their damage is lower. The only advantage is that the projectile hits the enemy immediately, and the reload seems to be faster. But I don't know, it doesn't really matter to me.
