It's impossible to play Giant Scenario maps of "incredible" and "incredible with Dungeon" sizes without it. You probably haven't played such maps if you think that way.
I have played them. It's quite possible. Yes, it's more convenient with it, but it's not absolutely necessary.
Well, Astral is really necessary on large Giant Scenario maps. In theory, you can break through any guard with Dark Magic (Necromancer or with artifacts that ignore magic immunity), but as a rule, maps of this size are not played to clear the entire map, but after a certain time, you simply teleport to meet the opponent.
Yes, I haven't read the whole thread, and I haven't played Heroes for a long time, but I had to jump in and express my very important opinion.
If the game is not against the AI, but against a human player, I don't understand even more. Neither of them has Astral => everyone is on equal terms. Saving time? Just don't generate XL maps, and you'll save time, haha.
For me, the whole point of "Heroes" was playing on Giant Scenario maps of "incredible" and "incredible with Dungeon" sizes.
Generate a map of the maximum size, and then teleport all over it without even clearing it => that's the whole point of playing Heroes. No, I can't understand that, unfortunately :D
