Patch 3.1 was included in the game right after purchase.

That's a strange version, considering the patch was released a year after the last expansion. I can only recommend looking for a different version and applying the patch manually. At the start, there should be a tutorial dialogue; you don't even need to go around the houses.
By the way, the patch isn't limited to just TalkBox; they actually added so many features that I don't understand how you can do anything without it – floor/ceil/round, the expanded SetObjectPosition and AddHeroCreatures, new triggers, GiveHeroBattleBonus – I actively use all of these.
