I don't know about you, but for me, my character is my creation, with its own personality and character, and not just a set of stats or the ability to "immerse" myself in the game world. All (or almost all) of their actions are the result of my reflections on how this living character should act in a given situation.
My own sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with this. I don't pay attention to the author specifically; my character interacts with other characters and the game environment, and that's it.
They don't take people like that.
