Gordian Brutti tried to consult the map during the voyage. Of course, it was terrible, and the helmsman couldn't exactly call himself an experienced navigator. But he believed that whatever a person does, they should have some idea of what's happening around them.
In general, he probably had at least a minimal understanding that they were heading in the wrong direction. The captain's comment on this didn't fully satisfy him, but it was still better than silence.
