I thought I saw someone mention here that reputation points reset when you change it, or am I mistaken?

I don't know about that.
But in any case, it's a rather lengthy process – because earning a minimum of 1250 points on a map to change your reputation requires some effort – and by that point, it might not even make sense to change anything.
