The cool morning had ended and given way to a warm, clear day – the sky was blue and cloudless.
“Ah! What wonderful weather! The day promises to be good, don't you think, my dear friend?” Today was Count Crimson Peak’s sixtieth birthday; he was already gray and thin, but his eyes still sparkled with joy for life.
“Yes, grandfather.” The count’s granddaughter was a slender thirteen-year-old girl with a pretty face, fiery hair, and emerald eyes.
The count cheerfully looked now at his granddaughter, now at the servants, and then observed the summer greenery around his estate. “My dear, would you do me a favor!”
The girl immediately understood what her grandfather meant and happily fulfilled his request – she sang him a song that was popular among Catharian nobility.
When she finished, the count clapped merrily. “Marie, you have such a wonderful voice!” At these words, the girl blushed and smiled happily. The count wasn’t flattering his granddaughter; she really did have an excellent voice, and if she didn’t stop practicing, she would certainly become a remarkable singer.
“Sir.” A man of middle age appeared in the doorway, head bowed. This was the count’s servant. “The guests have arrived.”
“Here they are, yes, yes!” The count briskly and cheerfully headed down the stairs.

Somewhere high above Crimson Peak, a strategic bomber flew, its wings cutting through the blue and cloudless sky. At 13:00, it dropped a bomb and wiped the count’s estate off the face of the earth.

At this time, many people were undergoing interviews and various tests at Thant Technologies headquarters. Martin Swift and his assistant Amanda Green conducted the interviews, while Richard Irgendwann, head of security, oversaw the combat readiness assessment. After that, Irene Haste, Ernst Zuter, Laurent, Basil, Jerod, Ramzan Dudayev, Mara Schiller, Arnold Aldersheim, and Wenling were taken to the head of special operations.
“My name is Jonathan Brown, I already know your names, so let's get straight to the point. First, let me tell you about the job you are being hired for. Firstly, the pay is good, but the work is dangerous. The Special Operations Department deals with performing a wide variety of tasks. Armed conflicts, local skirmishes, undercover work, infiltration into protected areas, and much more. In other words, during an assignment, you can easily be killed. Secondly, our organization’s activities may cause certain harm not only to specific individuals and corporations but also to entire states. Do you have any problems with that?
