I interpret the newspaper excerpt as follows:

"From early morning" are the key words. Arrec has been feeling unwell for a long time, since the previous day, and his condition worsened overnight.

Sesame hurried to get out of the sewer, using every bit of shadow.

She climbed into the sewer and was caught by a rat there. Yes, the corpse description mentions the sewer, but we're using the process of elimination here.
