In this game, they don't fit well with the earth element; Ents and Dragons would be more appropriate.
And they shouldn't. It's not necessary to design all creatures of the same element; that would even be boring. In Heroes 5, the Altegride unicorns were light unicorns, creatures of the light element, "subjects" of Elrath. They fit perfectly.
The current phoenixes would make more sense for mages if they were assigned to some faction, but mages already have phoenix replacements.
It would be logical if mages could summon them, but recruiting them is a bit strange. Mages have never been good with animals; they constantly escape from these sadists. ;)
Two bird champions are an overkill.
What's wrong with birds compared to dragons? Let them be.
Besides, an Ent champion looks more appropriate, in my opinion.
I agree with that. But I didn't come up with the concept of a fixed number of units for each level, so there's nothing I can do about it. Of course, we could create some very weak fairies, but having three champions for the elves would be interesting. Or we could remove the dragons, but no one would agree to that...
