I've only completed the second mission so far. While it's still fresh in my mind, I want to ask some questions. The secondary objective states: "Don't encounter the dwarves, and you'll get a reward." Is there a way to modify this objective? In my opinion, it's impossible to complete. I tried to avoid the dwarves, but some of them were even afraid of my Waren and didn't come close. Then, a bearded man named Helmar arrived with his equally bearded companions and gave Andrew a beating right in Lake City. Andrew was just sitting quietly and didn't even look at their gathering from behind the city walls. I felt disheartened. I had to reload, regroup, equip Waren with all the best gear, and personally give Helmar a taste of his own medicine. After that, diplomacy was out of the question.
It is quite achievable. You need to avoid encountering the dwarf priests from Grimheim (or wherever they come from), who will only arrive after you capture all the cities of their fellow dwarves/elves on the map. At that point, you will receive a message stating that it is best to avoid this hero. You can and even should destroy the other dwarves. Personally, I didn't have any problems with this.
