Mafia 76. Illumination

Silence. Tranquility. Serenity. The night, adorned with thousands of bright stars and a full moon, was beautiful. Haven was empty: almost none of its inhabitants or foreign guests remained within its walls, and few would know that the events of Illumination would change Helligkeit forever. The Emissary lived up to his god's expectations and fulfilled the task set before him. Soon, Helligkeit will join the Ataraxian Empire. But this is another story, and dawn is already near.
This night should have marked the end of the life of a guest from distant lands – Faris. That’s what the woman who killed the king believed, at least. She had no trouble entering his apartments. But, to her dismay, Faris wasn't there. In the center of the room, in an armchair, sat the leader of the Golden Fingers, whose eyes were fixed on her.
"Murderer," he said quietly. "I knew you would come here."
The woman didn't answer; she only tightened her grip on the dagger hidden behind her back, preparing for the worst.
"The King of Helligkait meant everything to me," the man continued his monologue. "I was his loyal shield for many years, and when he left this world, I lost all meaning in life. The only thing I wanted after that was revenge. I wanted to kill the one who took the king away from his faithful subjects. I wanted to kill... You." For the first time, the Guardian looked away from the elven woman and gazed out the window, enjoying the view of the beautiful and peaceful nocturnal landscape. "However, then I heard Him. The Emperor made it clear to me that the desire for revenge and self-flagellation is not the way forward. He gave me a chance to live a second life, without being tormented by the mistakes of the past. Therefore… I no longer hold any grudge against you and give you the same opportunity that the emperor gave me."
That very night, the regicide left Haven and Helligkeit, never returning here again. A few months later, rumors spread that a girl resembling her was seen on the border of the Nine Kingdoms, pregnant.
Recognizing the outstanding skills of his emissary, the emperor appointed him to lead the territory of Helligkait on his behalf, helping the inhabitants of these lands achieve peace with themselves and those around them. He was assisted in this by the leader of the Fingers, Faris, Conrad von Braun, and Eleanor.
The Order of the Fingers ceased to exist, and its remaining members were never seen again.
Metzger turned one last time and glanced at Haven, then slung his heavy sword over his shoulder and walked away.
