In the last years of his life, Shendar was struck by a serious illness, brought on by stress (as the book mentioned, his teacher, Dascalos, was brutally torn apart by a werewolf known as Tromeros). Shendar tried to take an active part in the lives of the mages and help them in their scientific endeavors, but he did not possess the authority of Dascalos, which complicated his work. When Shendar died, he was buried next to his library, and of course, his tomb was never found. One of the most interesting myths about Shendar claimed that he chose the location for his library not by chance: it was the site of an ancient battle, a conflict between the Ant people. Shendar had a very negative attitude towards any manifestation of violence (in which he partially differed from his teacher, who, of course, did not support violence, but believed that sometimes it was the lesser of two evils). This motivated him to "cleanse" the site of the bloody battle within the most advanced and intellectual people of that time using the light of knowledge. Of course, there is more symbolism than real meaning in this, so most researchers agree that Shendar did not engage in such nonsense.
