Wow! What if we tweak the interface a bit? Or maybe don't let her learn certain spells, but instead give her access to better spells?

I don't think that would work. At least, it definitely doesn't work in reverse: placing spells in the spellbook causes the spellbook to not open (although the AI can still use them).
