In my opinion, it's to experience certain states and, ultimately, to enjoy those states. But there are so many diverse methods and ways to enjoy life that a reasonable person has no need for alcohol at all. A woman who is planning to have children should absolutely, strictly, and under no circumstances drink alcohol, not even a drop in any form. Otherwise, her child will, at worst, simply be mentally deficient (in the medical sense of the word), and at best, a child whose mother has consumed alcohol even in small amounts will have a severely weakened immune system, plus many other various disorders and diseases (including chronic ones). In other words, alcohol completely eliminates a woman's ability to give birth to a healthy child. And by the way, a dry law should be implemented at all costs to defeat this scourge – it only has positive effects, and no objective negative consequences, as practice shows. In 1985-1986, Gorbachev, at Ligachev's suggestion, introduced a dry law for only two years, and the result was: 1) The amount of alcohol consumed per capita decreased from 12 liters (of pure alcohol) to 4. 2) The number of sick newborns decreased. 3) The number of crimes committed throughout the country decreased. And there was no widespread illegal alcohol, no widespread moonshine production. And this is just the result of a partial implementation of the dry law.
