Secondary skills in Heroes 3.

I usually play as Haven, and for a while, I didn't understand why ballistics was useful. Then, after playing as other factions, I realized its value, but I still don't take it... :D I also don't take artillery or first aid (unless it's in Heroes of Might and Magic III, where it's much more useful).
