The key is the ratio of health/damage and the effectiveness of abilities/spells.
For example, if black dragons/curses amplify/weaken by approximately 20%, then the "first strike" spell, and not just that spell, becomes much more effective. In Heroes 3.55, for instance, the average health of level 1 units is 11, and the damage is 4, meaning that, all other things being equal, two identical units deal almost 40% of the health in one hit. This means that not only are some black dragons/curses irrelevant, but also some creature abilities, and the parameters of speed and morale become the most important. It also turns out that slow units are not buffed enough compared to fast ones.
Since this "first strike" is so effective, it makes sense to invest as much strength as possible into it, meaning that hitting with one "powerful" stack in the first round, crushing half of the opponent's army, is better than hitting second with several weak stacks.
Similarly, it's better to keep the army with one hero than to scatter it among several.
But! there are some nuances... the stack's attack shouldn't be too strong, otherwise a lot of potential damage will be wasted. Also, the army shouldn't be too strong where the situation doesn't require it... it's better to split it up and clear the area faster. The "simultaneous strike" ability also helps to correct the situation.
Therefore, I agree that in the fourth game, this is handled much better than in previous installments. But there is still room for improvement.

A hundred genies are definitely less effective than 50 genies and 50 nagas. And so on.
It's more effective to have 99 genies and 1 naga)) and even better, 1 titan
