Lately, our main Tournaments, both FB and OFB, haven't been very exciting.
First. Do we even need these Tournaments? Or have they become boring? Or should we hold them less frequently? Or should we come up with new rules each time to add variety? For example, should the next Tournament be All-Random?
Second. Regarding the default version for both Tournaments.
Lately, we've seen a lot of activity in Tournaments on SoD, but the last OFB didn't generate much interest. Could this be due to the default WT version? We currently have many players who prefer SoD. On the other hand, the recent MP showed that WT specialists feel very uncomfortable on SoD, which is not good in the long run for future international Tournaments.
On the Portal, I held the 4th and 5th qualifying rounds with a mix of versions.
IV (summer-autumn 2010). 45 matches: 24 on WT, 17 on SoD, 4 on TE-Lite
V (winter-spring 2011). 43 matches: 19 on WT, 19 on SoD, 5 on TE-Lite
It's impossible to say definitively which version is better.
Compared to the Lite version (SoD with possible WT settings), I don't like the following in SoD:
1) Lack of chess clocks
2) Lack of 2nd-level building upgrades
3) Presence of a pre-set stack
4) Presence of morale for neutrals
5) Lack of scroll replacement with gold
6) Presence of one-sided monoliths
I like Oelm's position on versions. I think it's better not to play HL templates on SoD.
Third. The format of the FB Tournament.
Actually, the division into two Tournaments - Qualifying and Final - was made specifically to hold a round-robin in the final stage, which gives the most objective result. But round-robins are complicated by withdrawals, both for objective reasons and due to a lack of motivation after a poor start.
If we continue to hold it as a bracket system, then we could combine OFB and FB into one Tournament: group stage - OFB, some participants advance from the groups, and the finalists from the previous FB are added, and then Full Double Elimination.
Therefore, we decided to conduct a poll and decide how to proceed based on its results.
Please vote and express your wishes.
The group tournament is very convenient because, with a 2-week deadline per round, you can play 3 matches in a week, take a month off, and continue the Tournament. But after several defeats, a player loses motivation and withdraws from the Tournament.
The bracket (including double elimination) and Swiss systems are more convenient in terms of motivation. But it's not always possible to find a common time with an opponent in 2-3 weeks. And you have to make decisions that are not always correct. In a round-robin system, if a registered player doesn't want to play, they don't play against everyone. In a bracket and Swiss system, it's more difficult to determine who to give a "technical win" to. P.S. I saw the topic late, so I couldn't vote for WT.
