It's actually quite non-linear. As I understand it, the difficulty of the current level depends on the ratio of the level of the developed skill to the current level of the hero. The first 5 levels progress very quickly, but after that, the level scale only fills up significantly based on the most developed skills of the character.
Okay, I understand. I just didn't notice it much as a Heroes player. In that game, to level up from 30 to 31, you have to defeat as many enemies as you did throughout the entire game. But in Skyrim, there's almost no difference between getting level 40 and level 41.
