Any joining of neutral creatures is prohibited; as an exception, joined creatures can be sacrificed in a pit or sold on the market.

In my humble opinion, diplomacy in H5 is not as overpowered as in Might and Magic III ;) I don't remember a situation where it saved me (except on one single-player map); on the contrary, I took it once, and no one joined me even once during the entire game.
