There's an initiative, but it works like the speed stat in the third game (it doesn't affect movement range, that's what the speed stat is for).

If I'm not mistaken, only the Orc champion deals 4 damage? Does that mean they are better suited for storming a fortress?

I don't know, I haven't reached them yet. But if that's the case, then Orcs aren't just the most suited for storming, they are better suited than all the others combined :)
