The defenders at the fortress... what should we do with them?

My tactic is as follows: attack the town with two leveled-up heroes (meaning armies, and one also with magic). The first hero (with good magic) attacks and destroys the gnome army (except for reinforcements), holding back the guards with walls. Then, the second army finishes off the guards along with the enemy's small army. Victory.
