Well, whether it was a continuation of the fifth or third game, fans would continue to play their version, and they would call the new one a malicious clone.

Not just a continuation, but an improvement, incorporating the best ideas and adding something new – that's what I advocate for. Let's move away from games and look at other applications that also have their sequels. For example, a browser. When a new browser is created, new features are added, and the old ones are not removed. Which is logical. If you add support for, say, flash, but remove html, then the browser will be, to put it mildly, deficient. In my opinion, this is how games should be approached.
