Nagan, you are absolutely right. I just don't think Dostoevsky writes in a more "expansive" way than Tolstoy. From your list, "The Gambler" and "Poor Folk" are actually relatively short works. And Fyodor Mikhailovich doesn't have any books in 4 volumes; the maximum is 1.5 ("The Brothers Karamazov"). But fate does have a big influence, that's true. To better understand the feelings of others, you need to experience them yourself. Fyodor Mikhailovich experienced a lot, which is why he conveys them so well in his works.
