We played with one restart; my opponent got their starting town, and I didn't. Neela appeared, so I figured I was lucky and decided not to tempt fate by constantly wishing for the best. On the map, one path quickly leads to a teleport, and the only way to escape the starting town is along that path or by going around the mountains in a spiral. There are 4 heroes, including Monere. He happened to be the first to go down into the underground and ran ahead, so he leveled up faster (plus, he immediately got a defense skill). There are no banks to be seen, but there are a lot of resources (I have 3 near the road and 1 in the depths of my starting town, and 2 rows in the underground). There's also a home-base Utopia. I'm heading towards my Inferno town because I'm going to be very short on money. Overall, the map is quite poor, with long underground tunnels. The result of the first week: I took a Fortress and scouted the area.

In the second week, I collected some money, captured a Pandora artifact for 5k experience, and scouted for resources. The underground turned out to be minimal, and we'll start from there in the third week. I have Djinns in my starting town.

In the third week, I take resources: 1+1+2+3 and a level 2 creature. There are a lot of Angels, so I decide to capture a Castle-Company. I'm sitting in the Castle-Company on day 137, but there's an annoying enemy hero nearby, so I send in a weak creature to lure him closer. The AI built Monks in the Stronghold, which is good. On the way to the Castle, I captured a +5 club, took an 8-unit Hive, and a Pandora artifact for the entire first level. I didn't see anything else interesting underground.

Fourth week: the AI kills my weak creature near the Castle, saving me the trouble of chasing it. I take 2 Pandora artifacts: 1 for experience, and the second for 20 Crusaders (!). I scout and see 2 resources, 2 Hives, and a Pandora artifact in the adjacent area. I run there. I only took the maximum resource; there was no way to get to the rest, so I just wasted time. I don't see anything better to do than to go back home to take a Utopia, especially since the blue flags are slowly approaching.
On day 147, I take a Utopia, and I get an Air magic book and a +5 to All stats sword. Using Air magic, I see 2 blue heroes near the rocks (!), and they're probably not just weak creatures. I have enough movement points, so I replenish my mana at a well nearby and head forward. There, I find Grindan with 6 Angels and a weak creature with 8 Psionic creatures and some other units (the rest of his forces are somewhere else). I kill all of them without them being able to escape and loot a level 3 resource nearby, after which I surrender.
At this point:
Monere is 18-15-10-11 (expert in Offense, Logistics, Defense, Tactics, Earth, Archery, Advanced Magic, Basic Air Magic) against
Arlach is 10-15-13-15 (expert in Offense, Artillery, Tactics, Wisdom, Logistics, Earth, Basic Ballistics and Fire Magic).
If it weren't for the lack of control skills on my opponent's side, it's hard to say how it would have ended. Of course, I had 17 Angels (built in the Castle) on day 211. But they wouldn't turn into Archangels anytime soon, and secondly, Grindan had all the Fire magic and expert-level skills, as the post-battle analysis showed.

P.S. This is, in my opinion, a telling situation where there's nothing to counter your opponent's advantage simply due to chance, and it becomes decisive. But in War of the Chosen, there's the Guild Restructuring feature, for example...
