The most useful spell of Darkness is Subjugation, of Light – Resurrection, of Summoning – Phoenix, of Chaos – Earth Shock. But my favorite is Resurrection; I always maxed out Light magic for all my heroes, and I never complained.
What's so good about "Resurrection"? At the beginning, it still allows you to avoid losses, but in large-scale battles, a couple of dozen level 2 warriors don't mean much. "Divine Retribution" is a different story. That's why Frida's specialization in "Lords of Magic" – "Vessel of Elrath" – is simply excellent. But in general, as I said, there are no most useful spells. Light magic gives an advantage when different armies clash, Chaos with good spellcasting allows you to overcome armies that are twice as large as yours, Summoning is good for supporting your army and when the enemy has a threefold advantage, and Darkness, when used skillfully, allows you to survive against legions of small creatures with just one dragon. But against a hero, all these advantages are weakened. For each battle, you need to find an approach; magic will become the key that leads to victory!
