This is the first and most likely the last time I'll play in World of Xeen, because the town portal being on fire is ridiculous, especially since not all hero classes can learn fire magic. What kind of balance is that?

All heroes have a chance to learn any magic; there's no need to spread nonsense. The point of transferring spells is to enhance the element itself. In World of Xeen, there isn't such a priority on leveling up specific elements (as in Shades of Darkness), because the elements themselves are more balanced thanks to these transfers.
