Capturing Shahdabia (the last Castle of the Academy) can be quite challenging – the army there is indeed quite decent (and the Titans and Rakshasas pose the greatest threat), and the hero is also high-level. You can make your life easier by recruiting a legion of iron golems (they are located away from the road between the first and second Academy cities) – then, with the "Wrath of the Horde" spell, the enemy army will melt before your eyes. Personally, I captured Shahdabia on day 14, and killed Alaric on day 18.
P.S. I recommend digging up the Tear of Ashi as quickly as possible – especially since its location is fixed.
