Spitting on conventions or deviating from the canon? That too can be phrased differently. Just putting an orc in a tree is silly. But if you design both the character and the habitat accordingly so they harmonize with each other and at least slightly resonate with general perceptions — believe me, there will be people who like it.

P.S. Do magic-hating, warlike dwarves exist? As far as I remember, neither height nor build allows them to lift heavy loads.

Dwarves with banhammers cooler than mine — at least HoMM 5. Dwarves living without magic — KB, TES (if I'm not mistaken, the Dwemer mostly used technology), also in the entire HoMM series they have magic resistance. I don't know the Warcraft universe well enough, I won't lie, but I'm sure if you dig, you'll find similar examples there. In literature, I can give far fewer cases, if only because the only fantasy with dwarves that I've read is "The Lord of the Rings."
