If you want to attack cannibals, trolls, and other creatures, I recommend upgrading the 'backstab' skill to level 3... and if you want to almost always kill with a backstab, you also need to upgrade the weapon you're using...

MasterPainKiller, you don't need to upgrade the weapon for backstabs, because the hero's attack and defense increase when using the weapon, but not the damage. A backstab always hits, ignoring the attack and defense ratio. Weapon damage only increases with the Strength stat (which also affects enhancement spells). In general, the strongest hero is obtained by leveling up a mage. You can't kill an Imperial Guard from behind as a warrior.
