And if you're really interested, don't ask for academic definitions. Listen to Edith Piaf (for easy searching - Йdith Piaf), for example, her "Non, je ne regrette rien," and find ten differences from some Lyuba Uspenskaya (or whoever is playing on the "Chanson" radio). By the way, Wikipedia can also enlighten you that Piaf is considered the greatest singer of the 20th century.

I won't take back my words; if you can't articulate the difference, then everything is clear... I, of course, listened to both singers before writing (I knew about Edith Piaf; they recently made a movie about her), and the difference is minimal; in French, everything is a bit more serious (I would even say boring); in ours, it's a little simpler but more fun; I won't say anything about vocal data, but it's still close to pop music.
