To be honest, I downloaded and tried pure warrior, pure mage, and explorer, but it's impossible to play them as purely one class. By the way, why wasn't it included?

Anyway, the combat mage still rules because the game is called Heroes of Might and Magic, and any pure class will lose to a combined class, at least. The only exception is that a pure mage can still compete with a combined class,
but it all depends on the player's experience and skill....
