For this, you don't really need to be a "father" (referring to a specific in-game term or strategy); you need to know how damage is calculated and have 3 levels of education (referring to in-game skills or attributes). Then, with simple arithmetic, you can easily see that with a small difference, it's more effective to have a slightly higher attack, and with a large difference, it's better to have defense. The player clearly aimed for more defense to get a decent bonus later, as a small amount of attack will come naturally.
