Nah, I think they just want to generate more hype. These episodes are essentially the same as expansions. So, they would have earned their money anyway.
Regarding WoW. Even though it's at its peak now, it won't last forever. If the Lich King doesn't introduce anything substantial, its popularity will slowly decline. There just aren't any strong competitors. Although the trailer is impressive.
