Based on my experience, you get used to fast movement instantly, and you can't imagine playing the game any other way. At a minimum, it's worth playing with the Portal animation, and you can even reset the first column. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but after removing the procedure, does the first column still affect the mechanics? Otherwise, you can simply play with the Portal animation, with the animation with the first column reset, and without it – there will be no difference. Just prohibit further modification of the animation, and that's it.
