He used the goblin-hunter upgrade (the one that sets traps; I might be mistaken about the creature's name, as I have a pirated copy). But is it really important which upgrade to take?

I don't quite agree! Humans are very good at defeating undead, especially in long games. Humans have higher initiative and move earlier, plus their hero's stats are always higher, and they will deal more damage. Also, the hero can cast Haste and Divine Retribution. And by the time the undead finally move, half of their army will already be gone. Plus, humans have Training. You can create a lot of Knights or Archers.
