[HMM III OFF TOURNAMENT] "Race for the Leader"

I don't understand something... Why did Kamikaze's rating decrease after the tournament??? :confused: :eek: It turns out he shouldn't have played in this stage at all; then he would have at least kept his rating... Mr. Organizer, please check the system for calculating his rating; it's either clearly malfunctioning or fundamentally incorrect.

The system is designed to show a player's strength at a given point in time, relative to the strongest player. That is, if the esteemed Vitaly (also known as Kamikaze) had played better (and he could have played better, since he showed an increase in his rating in the previous tournament), then his rating wouldn't have decreased. In other words, the rating works like this: the first time you play, you set an "initial" benchmark, and then the results are compared relative to the previous benchmark (depending on the quality of your game relative to the strongest player in that mini-tournament). Therefore, it's possible for the rating to both increase and decrease, which adds intrigue.
