You can defeat neutral creatures with minimal losses using Necromancers. Sacrifice one unit to take the hit, and then resurrect it at the end of the battle. And thanks to the Town Portal spell, you can build a Necropolis army even without a Necropolis castle (for example, in mission 2 for Necropolis in version 1.6).
