Important: the unit that is protected by the barrier must move first; otherwise, the enemy will immediately reach it when the barrier disappears on turn 3 (4).

The barrier disappears every other turn, actually... :) But under certain circumstances, it's not necessary to have the first move – you can simply blind the opponent, blast them with a devastating beam until their health is reduced to zero, and then strike properly...
