If the problem was with the fingers, I would have fixed it; I've done it before. But I tried holding the phone like that myself, and yes, it's a real grip, and the thumb hides behind the screen.

The problem is in the lines of the top. It's like a seam, but it's a bit strange, disappearing unexpectedly as if in patches... If it were real clothing, the seams would be solid, and there would probably be folds and shadows, because such clothing, if it's a sweater, has a shape, not just a flat surface.
