In reality, the ability to easily purchase a full upgrade is a peculiar flaw in the Heroes games; economic choices and saving should play a more significant role in an ideal strategy, in my opinion. In the early stages, especially in Heroes III, you're still scraping by and emptying your coffers, but in the late game, you're always short on gold in any part of the series...
