So let's separate the wheat from the chaff.
The in-game ranking involves two parameters: days and place!
Places are assigned based on the victory criteria for a given tournament. It just so happened that the hero's stats and then Mercury were historically used as the victory criterion. But in this tournament, the victory criterion has changed, as stated in post #240.

By the way, does the description of the in-game ranking say anything about the conditions for winning? Is there any mention of Mercury or hero stats?

Don't lump everything together. The in-game ranking is one thing, and the victory criteria for the tournament are another.
